An American Baseball Experience

By: Ymatruz | Filed under: |

The game last Saturday night was the most intense baseball game I have seen so far. I told my husband that I did not plan to sleep in the stadium that night. "Common guys end the game, we want to see the fireworks!", I shouted after the 11th inning with a tie score.

The very first baseball cap I bought.
Before 6 o'clock primetime last Saturday, my husband and I arrived in the TD Ballpark stadium in Bridgewater to watch the game of our local minor league baseball team Somerset Patriots versus the Bridgeport Bluefish. The weather that day was just perfect to celebrate our traditional annual dating anniversary. I could not forget it was four years ago, during a Somerset Patriots game, we announced to the world (through Facebook)that we were dating.

We liked going to the TD Ballpark Stadium. Every visit gave us the best experience of first class but affordable baseball game entertainment and therefore it was not surprising the stadium could draw an easy 5000 audiences for each game. The swirl ice cream in a baseball helmet and the cute kiddie game intermissions were just bonuses. There was no wonder also why the TD Ballpark was voted as the Best Ballpark in all of Independent Minor League Baseball by Ballpark Digest. They must have been so proud. Come and visit so you would know why.

Overall, the game was fun though the 8th inning bored me because I thought the Patriots would lose the game. I stood up and grabbed myself a cup of coffee. I heard the cheers in the background and it sounded like somebody hit a home run. True enough, Somerset Patriots had a comeback from 7-4 score in favor of Bluefish in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the score to 7-7. Everyone became excited and while Patriots fans were enjoying the action packed comeback, a fight broke out after the 9th inning but the issue was resolved quickly.

Bluefish got 3 hits in the 11th inning but ended all out so the score was kept tie at 7-7. It was a fireworks night and July 4th weekend so one of the most awaited moment was the fireworks display after the game. But this time, the game was paused before the 12th inning so that the fans could watch the fireworks. It was already 11 o'clock in the night, too. The kids and the not-so-young needed to go home and rest. And it was understandable that the neighborhood may not like it when the fireworks would burst during the wee hours of morning as nobody knew what time the game would have ended.

The bottom of the 12th, 13th and 14th inning had tie score still at 7-7 and I knew my husband was enjoying the game and I did not want to kill his fun. Since, we waited long enough we might as well wait for the final score. In his social media update he said, "A three run comeback in the bottom of the 9th. A bench-clearing kerfuffle after that. Then play was paused after the 11th inning for fireworks. This is the strangest game ever!" Well, I agreed and it was indeed a good and exciting experience.

At about 1 o'clock in the morning, came the exhausting but sweet 15th inning win for the Somerset Patriots with 8-7. We were handed a pack of candy as we were leaving the stadium. It was very nice to receive small treats like that after the game was over. Finally, after more than 7 hours inside watching a single game, we were able to go home and sleep!
